Welcome
to Concordia University Irvine
Five hundred years ago, an obscure university – with only a handful of faculty and less than one thousand students – forever altered the course of western history. This obscure institution was Wittenberg University, the birthplace of the Protestant Reformation. On the strength of the ideas that were given shape, Wittenberg faculty and graduates exerted a profound influence in the shaping of the modern world. Martin Luther well understood that free people stand not only in relation to God, but also in relation to the world and to one another. Thus, the Lutheran heritage of higher education became defined by a rigorous study of God’s word and God’s world, equipping students to be servants of both.
Five hundred years later, Concordia University Irvine proudly preserves, defends and promotes that heritage. In doing so we are motivated by the perceptive words of Luther himself: “You parents cannot prepare a more dependable treasure for your children than an education in the liberal arts.” At Concordia Irvine, we are dedicated to shaping a coherent and comprehensive view of the world, of humanity and of the God who has created and redeemed both. It is faithfulness to this mission and this heritage which makes Concordia graduates, like those of Luther’s Wittenberg, “wise, honorable, and cultivated citizens” prepared for and devoted to serving God’s world and proclaiming God’s word.
Concordia University: Commissioned by Christ, developing wise, honorable, and cultivated citizens.
