Concordia Earns Fourth-Place Finish in Directors' Cup

Irvine, CA — For the fourth year in a row, Concordia has captured a top-5 finish in the Learfield Sports Directors' Cup, as the Eagles Athletics program finished fourth overall in the final 2009-10 standings.

The fourth-place finish marks the fifth year in a row that Concordia Athletics has posted a top-10 points total, thanks in part to appearances at the NAIA National Championships for five spring sports.

"Earning another top-five finish in the Directors' Cup is just a testament to the hard work and dedication of our coaching staff and our student-athletes at Concordia," first-year Athletics Director David Bireline said. "The way that the Concordia student-athletes perform both on the field and in the classroom reflects the fact that we're on track in our pursuit of excellence."

This year's spring finish was highlighted by the second consecutive semifinals showing for Concordia women's tennis, while men's tennis advanced to the quarterfinals for the second year in a row.

Eagles softball played in its second-straight National Championships, finishing in pool play for the second year in a row, while freshman Nick Robinson's national title in the shot put highlighted National Championships appearances for men's and women's outdoor track and field.

Other teams who reached their respective NAIA National Championships throughout the year were volleyball--which reached the semifinals for the fourth year in a row under first-year head coach Kyle Kvasnicka--women's cross country, men's basketball and men's and women's swimming.

Concordia student-athletes also excelled in the classroom, garnering a total of 30 Golden State Athletic Conference Scholar-Athlete honors throughout the 2009-10 academic year. Senior women's basketball player Lindsey Kingsland earned Concordia's Presidential Showcase for her research and presentation on Chagas disease.
